We are so excited to announce that as of Monday, September 3rd, 2016, we have officially recycled over 2000 pounds of glass! Over a ton of wine and spirit bottles have been recycled, thanks to your help. While not all bottles make the grade to become Carolina Wren Candles, due to shape or design, we use the ones we can, and the others are sent to the recycling center along with the unused parts of the bottles we cut.
This has become one of the most rewarding benefits of making our candles. Reaching 2000 pounds in 5 months has been great, but we have new goals to recycle more bottles in less time.
Thanks again for your support in letting us make your world smell a little nicer and our world a little greener.
"Do you want to go with me to Tomlinson's?" , my mother would ask when I was a little girl. My answer was always, "Yes!"
As I child I knew there was something special about this unique store in Florence. Plain concrete floors, no stylish mannequins, and a family of staff who greeted you like they'd missed you.
Because it was smaller than most department stores, my mother gave me the freedom to look around while she picked out new sheets and towels for our home. I would head straight for the back wall, where the framed art seemed so wonderful to a child. So much beauty in one place. Landscapes -- some local, most not. Famous buildings and works of architecture. Exotic animals, farm animals, and pets. For me, a trip to Tomlinson's was a chance to see God's handiwork through the eyes of gifted artists.
My second source of fascination were the miniature salt and pepper shakers for use at individual place settings at formal dinners. I had no idea at the time why anyone would want such a tiny set, but they were adorable to me.
Now, forty to fifty years later, I still love this place. It is now managed by the founder's great-grandson, and has been (mostly) family-owned for 80 years. The people on the sales floor have been there forever, and they still greet you like they're so glad to see you again.
Stop by and say hello to everyone, and look for our candles, after you enjoy the art wall.

To date we have recycled 1326 wine and spirits bottles. Empty wine and spirits bottles average out to approx.19.25 oz or 1.2 lbs each. That means we have converted 1,604 lbs have of glass into either candles or recycled to make other glass products!
For those of you who may not be familiar with our candles, we pour them into wine bottles that we collect from local restaurants. As we started collecting in May of this year, we soon realized that not all wine bottles are created equally. Either the punt ( dimple in the bottom ) was too big, the glass was too thin, or shape wasn't quite what we were looking for.
Needless to say, we handle a lot of glass on a weekly basis. Every bottle we cut produces a neck/bell that we "currently" don't use. These necks, along with those bottles that didn't meet our criteria or standards, were doomed to be discarded.
We realized from the beginning the responsibility we had as a company and a member of our community to make sure the unused glass was recycled as opposed to simply being discarded into a landfill.
We have maintained that commitment from the start and we are glad to announce that to date we have recycled 1014 wine bottles.
That's a little over 101 bottles a week. I know it doesn't seem like much now, but imagine the impact we could make if we maintain this pace. WE NEED YOUR HELP!
You can help support our recycling efforts by......wait for it.....drinking more wine! Please visit the restaurants who support us and have a glass of wine. You can go to Red Bone Alley at the Florence Mall or go by Victors or Fiasco located on Evans Street in downtown Florence, and enjoy great atmosphere, incredible food, excellent service and of course your favorite bottle of vino.
If you need a gift for a special occasion or a wonderful fragrance to fill your home, click Shop at the top of the page and order a candle from us, or visit one of our retailers.
Thanks again for all your support!
Whether you're on the way to see a friend or family member at McLeod Hospital, or taking them home after an out-patient procedure, let that special someone know you care. Stop by the gift shop on the concourse and pickup one of our candles with a warm, relaxing fragrance. Choose from apple jack and peel, clean cotton, lavender, or cashmere. You'll find them at the register of the shop located in the Main Tower.
When we share our candles with friends and family, they first comment on which fragrance they like best. Once we tell them the container is made from recycled wine bottles, their next response is, " Wow! How did you do that?"
We thought we would share the general sequence, so you can follow along and enjoy the process of turning "wine into wax".
We are "hand cut, hand poured, and hand made" .
We have really enjoyed watching and pulling for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers as they battle their way through the College World Series against powerhouse University of Arizona. Tonight is the championship game and it has all the indications to be a great game.
But win or lose, we are both so proud of Coastal and how well they have represented our state. In honor of them we are offering a special coupon from today until Saturday. Type in CWS (that stands for College World Series) in the coupon section at checkout and receive 20% off all orders!
I mentioned last week that we had some exciting news coming and we are finally ready to announce it.
Starting in July, Carolina Wren candles will be available in the South Carolina State Museum "Cotton Mill Exchange" gift shop! We are extremely excited and proud to be working with yet another state landmark. You may recall that last week we announced that you could find us at our state capital.
The gift shop will be carrying a variety of fragrances --- Apple Jack & Peel, Cashmere, Lavender and Campfire.
If a visit to the state house or the museum is on your list of things to do this summer, please go to the gift shop for a souvenir and show your support for local businesses.
